I draw without much preparation or planning. It may be just to give form to/build an idea, try something out, see how it looks, see how parts may relate to each other. I suppose exploratory. The immediacy, gesture, touch and naturalness of the activity makes it feel direct from brain through body to paper and back.
I use my phone to draw, take photos video, colour and edit images, make notes, read, research, listen to music. It’s a sketchbook, notebook, camera, radio and library all in one. I can work on things at any time. I don’t know that it is separate entirely to material drawing and painting but it is a different medium and experience. It is screen based, you use a mouse or your finger, it is small scale, it is not material in the same way unless you print.
I guess they both inform each other now and the painting work. The interface, transition and facsimile of other mediums is pretty good and I work across them.
