This painting came out of two quite organic or naturally themed pictures. I was using the idea of upward growth which became a garden, then a field, then a landscape with a central bird like form. I was channeling Bacon’s line about a bird alighting on a field becoming ‘Painting 1946’ and the disingenuousness of it. The landscape and bird became a patchwork of areas that formed a basement type chamber with a a lower and upper aperture (trapdoor and skylight). This then became where it is now.
