Painting

This painting came about through repeated working of the surface with gestural, calligraphic brushwork. I tried out a whole load of different structured forms within the painting, boxes, oblongs, frame like shapes but nothing held and this splayed bodily form emerged out of the blue. I’d been reading Moby Dick and had been looking at pictures of the whaling trade so maybe this came. It’s quite visceral with lots of finger work. It could be a wound or a body or an incident.
