This work took a film still from the Laurel & Hardy film ‘The Finishing Touches’ as its basis. The still was of the scene where Stan is sawing through a plank of wood that is balanced on a window ledge and Laurel is sitting on a box on the end through the window reading a newspaper. I’ve given the work many treatments and interations and will probably continue to do so. I love the structure of the image, the balance, the angles, the composition. I also love the humour, the prank or pratfall in suspension. There’s also the play on ‘work’ or ‘labour’ and the metaphor for the process of ‘making’, be it a house, a shelf or a painting. I probably maxed out on this, over did it, ruined it. But I definitely learnt from it and it’s still there to revisit.
